The MenEngage alliance for Gender Equality and Ending Gender Based Violence was established in Pakistan as a follow up a regional consultation meeting held in Kathmandu-Nepal ( January 2007). The Pakistan chapter, of the MenEngage Alliance South Asia, set a long term and short-term goal in the 1st meeting of MenEngage Alliance Pakistan held on the 21st of May 2007.

Long Term

  • To engage men and boys in the efforts for gender equality and ending violence.

Short Term

  • A growing network of NGOs, Government of Pakistan and UN agencies to prevent gender based violence through active involvement of men and boys.

The strategies of MEA Pakistan are aligned with the Global MenEngage strategies, which include 1-advocacy, and policy, 2-research and mapping and 3- capacity building and networking.

National Secretariat

The secretariat of MenEngage Alliance in Pakistan is hosted, since October 2011, by AMAL Human Development Network, a gender—focused HIV & AIDS action group and one of the most visible advocates for prevention, treatment and awareness in Pakistan.  AMAL engages with a number of important related issues in the course of tackling the HIV & AIDS problem with special focus on marginalized and vulnerable groups of women and young children who not only suffer social exclusion but are also highly exposed to the evils of violence, trafficking and sexual abuse.

Prior to this, for the period of May 2009 to September 2011, the secretariat was hosted by ROZAN, an Islamabad based NGO working on issues related to emotional health, gender, violence against women, children, and the reproductive health of adolescents. The secretariat was initially hosted by UNDP under the Gender Justice Through Musalihat Anjuman Project (GJTMAP) project since its inception in March 2007.
