This year’s United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) took place in March in New York, and many MenEngage Alliance members attended and took an active part.
We have compiled this report, which includes link to outcome documents, speeches and resources, to share the experience of MenEngage Alliance at CSW61 with our members, partners and friends, bringing in a specific focus on transforming masculinities and engaging men and boys in women’s rights and gender justice.
Highlights for MenEngage Alliance include:
- Broad support from governments around the world for progressive approaches to women’s economic empowerment, and several paragraphs in the commission’s agreed conclusions which reference the need to work with men and boys as partners to transform harmful social norms and attitudes.
- Active participation of young people in this year’s CSW, including the second annual CSW Youth Forum and declaration and the CSW61 Young Feminist Caucus Statement.
- A consultation on “Engaging men and boys in social norms change on women’s rights and gender justice to inform a transformative Agenda for Action to achieve the SDGs” organized by MenEngage Alliance together with members and partners to compile recommendations for the High Level Political Forum at the UNGA to be held in July 2017.
- Engaging side events organized by MenEngage Alliance members and partners such as ABAAD, Breakthrough, Reform-Resource Centre for Men, Women Peacemakers Program (WPP), IPPF, Sonke Gender Justice, MenEngage Africa, Care International. We collaborated in events with partners such as UN Women, UNFPA, Permanent Mission of Iceland to the UN in New York and many others.
