ZAMBIA NATIONAL MEN’S NETWORK (ZNMN) CONDEMNS VIOLENT THREAT AGAINST HON: MOONO LUBEZHI BY EDUCATION MINISTER MICHAEL KAINGU
For immediate release: 26th March, 2015
The Zambia National Men’s Network (ZNMN) would like to condemn MMD Mwandi Member of Parliament, who is also Minister of Education, Michael Kaingu, for threatening UPND Namwala Member of Parliament, Honourable Moono Lubezhi, with violence and calling her a prostitute when he failed to answer her question on the floor of the House.
It is regrettable that the Minister of Education did not exhibit the behaviour of a national leader to be addressed as Honourable Minister for his violent threats against a woman. If the Minister of Education can do such a thing to threaten a woman Member of Parliament with violence in the House, how does the country expect him to fight sexual violence against girls in schools?
As an organization that is mobilizing men to promote gender equality and fighting violence against women, we are disappointed with the Minister of Education’s violent conduct against a defenseless woman. Honourable Lubezhi had a right to demand an explanation of national importance from the Minister. We wish to remind the Minister that Parliament is not a boxing ring but a dignified place for addressing issues affecting Zambians.
The Minister of Education as a national leader has violated Zambia’s commitments of the SADC and African Union Protocols and the Convection on the Protection of Women Against all Forms of Discrimination (CEDAW) that has provisions to protect women against all forms of discrimination. We feel that the Minister of Education has betrayed these commitments and should be held to account for his actions.
Zambia is a signatory to these important instruments and therefore national leaders have an obligation to protect women. Leaders who violate these commitments do not deserve to serve in government. We therefore DEMAND that the Minister apologizes or step down for betraying Zambia’s commitment to these instruments.
