Communications internship 2024

Are you passionate about writing, digital communications, gender equality, and social justice? MenEngage Global Alliance is looking for a self-motivated advocate for women’s rights and gender justice to join the team for an internship placement for 6 months. You will develop skills and experience in critical political and activist work that aims to help advance women’s rights and gender equality through transforming masculinities and engaging boys and men.

You will have the opportunity to tap into the experiences and knowledge of the network’s 1100+ global membership to write engaging and inspiring content that supports feminist approaches to working with men and boys around the world.

This role can be based anywhere with suitable web connectivity. The role is 4-5 days per week, working from 9am – 5pm, although we support flexible working.

About MenEngage Alliance

MenEngage Alliance is an international network of civil society organizations working to transform unequal power-relations and dismantle patriarchy through transforming masculinities and engaging men and boys to advance women’s rights and gender justice for all. The Alliance unites civil society organizations, activists, academics, and other stakeholders from more than 1000 organizations across 72 countries, working together through country and regional networks.

The Alliance plays a pivotal role in shaping the discourse and agenda on transforming masculinities and engaging men and boys within the broader movement for women’s rights and gender justice, particularly in the areas of gender-based violence prevention, advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights for all, redistributing unpaid care-work, and advancing gender, peace and security. The Global Secretariat is a small, remote team based in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. MenEngage Global Alliance is registered in Washington DC.

Responsibilities

You will be working closely with the global communications manager to:

  • Coordinate the global newsletter of MenEngage Alliance that goes to 7,000 subscribers in the gender justice and international development space by monitoring for and curating relevant content, and formatting/preparing the newsletters to send on a regular basis.
  • Develop impactful content for the MenEngage Alliance social media channels, website, and other channels, based on feminist-informed work with men and boys for gender equality, women’s rights, and LGBTQI rights. This includes promoting the latest MenEngage Alliance events and campaigns, and social media posts in solidarity with other campaigns and movements.
  • Join team calls and meetings and work alongside the global secretariat team, and in partnership with the different MenEngage networks around the world.
  • Other tasks can be discussed based on your individual skills and interests, as well as the priorities for MenEngage Alliance.
  • Participate in and support the administration of the global Communications and Knowledge Management Working Group.

Skills and experience

The following list shows some of the skills and experience you will need. If you do not feel you have all of these skills, please consider applying based on the skills and qualities that you feel make you a relevant candidate for this internship:

  • Highly self-motivated, strong organizational skills, time management, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills.
  • A passion for writing and communicating about gender justice, as well as demonstrated experience producing written content for different audiences.
  • Fluent English. Fluency in French or Spanish would also be an advantage. 
  • Experience managing public social media accounts for organizations or groups.
  • Demonstrated abilities and skills in researching and processing information from a broad range of sources.
  • Keen interest in the latest news and discussion in the area of social justice, intersectional feminism, as well as strong analytical skills related to social and political norms and structures.
  • Interest and understanding of feminism, women’s rights, and ‘men and masculinities’ work.
  • Education or work experience background in journalism, communications, gender studies or related fields will be an advantage
  • Proficiency with collaborative writing and design tools including Canva, Google Suite and email marketing platforms.

Terms

The internship is for 4-5 days per week, which can be mutually agreed upon with the successful applicant. A salary will be paid, in line with the appropriate local standards of pay for internships or junior/entry level positions.
