Affirming our collective commitment to accelerate the promise of ICPD

The 2019 Nairobi Summit on ICPD took place in November 2019. The event marked 25 years since the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which took place in Cairo in 1994. ICPD was seen as a key point in the shift from approaching population through demographics or statistics, and towards a people-centered approach that addresses groups and individuals’ specific circumstances and needs. It was a landmark conference for the recognition, protection, and promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
25 years on, those commitments have not yet been met. The 2019 Nairobi Summit on ICPD brought together NGOs, government representatives, and intergovernmental bodies to accelerate the promise of ICPD.

A number of MenEngage Alliance members joined the 2019 Nairobi Summit on ICPD, and even more contributed to the discussions remotely. A joint statement was developed in support and solidarity with feminist, SRHR, Youth and LGBTIQ and Gender Non-Conforming rights. In particular, the Statement calls for efforts to transform masculinities through gender transformative approaches in support of those rights.
