MenEngage Africa is a diverse and energised network that meets regularly, from its annual general meeting to various learning spaces and training initiatives. The network has hosted or co-hosted four major MenEngage symposiums (three regional and one global), launched its own annual training initiative, established a youth network, and supported the development of the region’s country networks.

All members of MenEngage Africa are registered non-governmental organisations that come together to form the network. Members of MenEngage Africa work individually and collectively on critical feminist issues including violence against women and girls, ending female genital mutilation, sexual and reproductive health and rights, caregiving, and peace building.

MenEngage Africa members work together for joint advocacy at national levels with their governments. At international levels, members work with Regional Economic Communities and intergovernmental agencies such as the African Union. Through MenEngage Africa, members have the opportunity to join the MenEngage Africa Training Initiative (MATI), which offers capacity building programs that are run regularly with partners. The vision for the MenEngage Africa Training Initiative is to build a dynamic, vocal and visible network of leaders and gender justice advocates that will drive the gender equality and human rights agenda on the African continent.

As with all MenEngage networks, the common thread that unites its membership is working with men and boys to advance gender equality, helping men find positive answers to questions around masculinity, and mobilising society to question, challenge, and transform harmful notions of what it means to be a man.

How we are organized

The highest decision-making body of MenEngage Africa is the annual general meeting (AGM) which sits once annually. The network is governed by a Steering Committee that is elected by AGM. The Steering Committee is made up of sub-regional representatives, strategic partners representing organisations working in relevant thematic areas, and representatives of key constituencies for youth, women’s rights and LGBTIQ+ rights.
