Are you already a member of MenEngage Alliance? This page is about reaffirming your membership
MenEngage Alliance is built on shared values and commitments. From 2020 to 2022, hundreds of members embarked on a collective process of deep discussions about the agreements and principles that unite us. This collective effort led to the creation of the Accountability Framework of MenEngage Alliance, which now serves as the foundation for all our collaborations as a network.
Around the world, MenEngage networks and members have been reviewing, discussing, and reaffirming their commitment to these updated collective principles and standards.
In practice, this means carefully reviewing, reflecting on, and signing onto the Core Principles and Code of Conduct of MenEngage Alliance. In addition to the Core Principles and Code of Conduct, we also ask that members carefully read the Accountability Standards (although this is not a document that members need to sign). It is these three documents, the Core Principles, Code of Conduct, and Accountability Standards, which together make up the MenEngage Accountability Framework.
Who is the reaffirmation process for?
The process to reaffirm commitment to the Accountability Framework is for those who are already members of MenEngage Alliance. If you are not a member, please do not proceed with this process. Instead, go to this page to learn more about becoming a member. If you are not sure if you or your organisation is a member or not, please email email hidden; JavaScript is required for clarification.
For existing members, reaffirming your commitment to the Accountability Framework is a requirement in order to continue your membership. This is applicable to all members of all networks of MenEngage Alliance. If you have questions of concerns that you would like to discuss before signing the Accountability Framework, we will be happy to organise a call with you – please email networks@menengage.org to arrange this.
Why did we create the Accountability Framework?
The process that led to the creation of the Accountability Framework came 14 years after the original MenEngage Core Principles were written, and seven years since the 2014 edition of our Accountability Standards and Code of Conduct were written.
During this time, our collective understanding of feminist-informed work with men and boys has grown, as well as our understanding of our role within broader efforts for gender, social, and climate justice. It was also a period of significant cultural, social, and political shifts globally.
To reflect these changes in ourselves and the world around us, it was decided that our core documents should be updated through a collective process. This process created important opportunities to connect with each other to reflect on, clarify, and refresh our shared principles and values. The resulting Accountability Framework continues to create spaces for discussing the concepts and ideas that underpin our shared vision and mission as an international network.
How have the documents been updated?
These documents were carefully reviewed and revised through a consultative and participatory process. In partnership with ATHENA Network and The Equality Institute, we worked with members and partners around the world to consult on, reflect, examine, and update them. This was led by the Global Secretariat in close partnership with regional network coordinators.
The update built on years of critical discussion on the effectiveness and accountability of work to transform masculinities and engage men and boys in women’s rights, LGBTIQ rights, gender and climate justice.
The consultation involved members, regional representatives, and key feminist partners of MenEngage Alliance, at national, regional and global levels. More than 100 people were involved in dialogues, and 200 people provided their inputs via an extensive survey. The process involved several rounds of inputs and revisions to the texts. The final draft was presented to the Global Board and approved on 21 April 2022.
What are the main updates in the documents?
The documents are updated in several important ways, including:
- Improvements to make them clearer and easier to understand.
- Updates to language, political positions, and shared commitments to reflect our updated commitments as an Alliance. This includes stronger framings for accountability, and being informed by intersectional feminism.
- A clearer and more accessible structure.
How do I reaffirm my/our commitment to the Accountability Framework?
Reaffirmation is done online. First, carefully review the Core Principles and Code of Conduct of MenEngage Alliance, as well as the Accountability Framework. If you are reaffirming on behalf of an organisation, you will need to make sure that the decision to reaffirm is made at an institutional level.
