Gender-based violence
The understanding that gender-based violence is not just a ‘women’s issue’ but a societal issue where men and boys have critical roles and responsibilities, unites the global membership of MenEngage Alliance.
Men and boys constitute the majority of perpetrators of violence. Existing notions of manhood socialise men and boys to dominate others, engage in high-risk behaviours, and discriminate against women, girls, & LGBTQI individuals.
Through MenEngage Alliance, members come together to drive change on policy advocacy, identify and advance promising practices in the field, and push for transformative strategies to prevent and end gender-based violence.
Across the network, examples of programs addressing gender-based violence are widespread — from engaging male faith leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to encouraging boys in Sri Lanka to reflect on the impacts of masculine stereotypes through journaling. As a network, we ensure these initiatives do not operate in isolation but strengthen one another through facilitating processes of mutual learning, exchange, and support.
