COP29 Sign-on Statement: Achieving Climate Justice by Challenging Patriarchy
A joint statement developed by members of MenEngage Alliance calling for the transformation of patriarchal masculinities and engaging men as allies for feminist climate justice and systemic change.
As MenEngage Alliance our unique contribution is to transform patriarchal masculinities and work with men and boys through accountable and intersectional feminist approaches. As part of this mission, the MenEngage Alliance Climate and Environmental Justice Working Group has been advancing research, advocacy and practice on engaging men and boys as allies for climate and gender justice, as well as analysis on how patriarchal masculinities are implicated in the climate crisis, and why they must be transformed.

The sign-on statement shares political analysis on work with men and boys as individuals who are often more likely to be contributing to the climate crisis and how to ally them, shifting patriarchal masculinity norms and systems which continue to impede feminist systems change for climate justice, and working with men in positions of power, who continue to hold most of the leadership positions in private industry, Governments, climate negotiators, etc.
Our key demands for COP29 and beyond:
- Address Patriarchal Masculinities and Engage Men and Boys as agents of change for Climate Justice
- Integrate Gender Equality and Justice into Global Climate Policies
- Develop Accountability Mechanisms for Climate Decision-Making
- Financing for Urgent Climate Action by the Global North
- Protection of Environmental and Human Rights Defenders
- System Change for a Caring Economy
