SVRI is revisiting the elephant in the room on men and masculinities, 10+ years later. What’s changed?

On 17 September 2015, at the SVRI Forum 2015 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, an impromptu “Elephant in the Room” discussion opened rare space for honest dialogue on the tensions and open questions around engaging men and masculinities in violence-against-women prevention.
Over a decade on, this Salon, taking place as part of SVRI Forum 2026 in Bangkok on 6 October, revisits that conversation against a shifted landscape: growing interest from new actors, the rise of the manosphere and backlash, changing funding priorities, evolving accountability debates, and concerns about fragmentation in the field.
Participants are invited into an open, candid space to name the field’s persistent “elephants,” take stock of what’s changed, and begin charting a shared agenda, including a possible collective message to donors and researchers on accountability, evidence, and resourcing.
