#ActForSRHR is a campaign by MenEngage Africa and Sonke Gender Justice. We are working across the African continent to bring change.
With our message, Act. Challenge. Protect. We ask everyone to take action. This includes leaders, health workers, parents, young people, and especially men and boys.

What we stand for
This campaign is about real change:
- Making sure everyone can get sexual and reproductive health services.
- Challenging shame, stigma, myths, and unjust laws.
- Changing laws to protect everyone’s rights.
- Getting men and boys involved as part of the solution.
Everyone can help make this happen.
What is SRHR?
SRHR stands for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. It is about:
- Being treated with respect.
- Making your own choices.
- Getting care that is safe and fair.
SRHR means:
- Birth control if you want it
- Choosing if or when to have children
- Respectful care at clinics
- Learning about your body and health
- Saying no to sex if you don’t want it
- Being yourself without fear
Everyone has these rights — no matter your gender, age, ability, or HIV status.
Why this campaign, why now?
- In Ethiopia, approximately 13% of adolescent girls aged 15 – 19 in Ethiopia have begun childbearing, with higher rates observed in rural areas compared to urban settings.(Source)
- In Malawi, over 141 000 unsafe abortions occur annually, contributing to 6 – 18% of maternal deaths.(Source)
- In Uganda, same-sex relationships are illegal, with harsh punishments under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. (Source)
- In South Africa, nearly 40% of women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. (Source)
Many people still face shame, fear, or danger when they try to get care. This must change.
