10 Policy Recommendations from lessons learned on effective transformative work with men and boys for sustainable gender equality
The recommendations in this document are distilled from the evidence that we have gathered over two decades of what works to engage men and boys for gender equality and social justice.
The current global context is marked by rising anti-democratic, authoritarian, and anti-rights movements, alongside deepening inequalities and systemic exploitation rooted in colonial and neoliberal systems. These forces disproportionately harm marginalized groups, including women, LGBTIQ+ people, and racial minorities, while exacerbating poverty and environmental degradation. We also continue to witness and experience how harmful norms of masculinity perpetuate violence and oppression, and attacks on human rights defenders and freedoms of speech and assembly are increasing.
In such a context, the question is what can be done? How can we meaningfully organize, from the local to the global levels, for gender justice? How can we promote and protect the freedom of individual and collective mobilization of assembly and speech?
To briefly answer these questions, we have put together these recommendations meant for policymakers and thematic experts working with governments to consider in their work on women’s rights, gender equality, human rights, and racial, environmental and social justice.
We hope this document serves as a powerful resource for collective action to dismantle patriarchal systems and transform harmful masculinities.
