International Transgender Day of Visibility: Celebrating the joy and resilience of trans and non-binary people

At MenEngage Alliance we stand in solidarity with the transgender community globally because “violence and discrimination against LGBTIQ people persist, including within our movements. We commit to work to create a world where trans and non-binary people can enjoy their human rights to justice and dignity” (MenEngage Global Alliance, 2022).

We, the members of MenEngage Alliance from across 92 countries around the world, recognize and reaffirm the human rights of all people regardless of sexual orientation, gender identities and sexual expressions. As outlined in our Core Principles, we advocate for the human rights of LGBTQIA people: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual individuals in all their diversities.

We understand that sexuality and gender identities are complex, fluid, and diverse, and we actively work to challenge harmful social norms that prioritize cisgender and heterosexual identities. We take this moment to shout out to and recognise our trans, non-binary and gender-expansive members, and partner organizations and networks. We stand with LGBTQI people and communities all over the world in our commitment to bodily autonomy and gender expression.

MenEngage Alliance strives to eradicate transphobia and sexism. We join LGBTQI movements in calling for the end of patriarchy and gender discrimination as these are at the root of all forms of  violence against trans, non-binary and gender-expansive people and communities. As an Alliance of networks and organizations working to transform patriarchal masculinities and engage men and boys in gender equality and social justice, today and every day, we want to amplify and elevate the work and leadership of all the LGBTQI human rights defenders. We recognize the unique struggles that transgender individuals face in a society that often fails to acknowledge and respect their identities. From discrimination and violence to systemic barriers, transgender people navigate a world that too often overlooks their needs and desires.

Amidst the rising backlash against and exclusion of trans and non-binary individuals’ rights, this is a critical moment to stand together to protect our shared human rights. Gender equality and human rights can only be a reality when all human beings are fully recognized in their entirety and diversity. It is incumbent upon us to challenge harmful norms, confront transphobia and heteronormativity, and create inclusive spaces where all individuals feel seen, respected, and valued.

As we commemorate International Transgender Day of Visibility, we recommit to the principles of equality, justice, and inclusion. Let us amplify the voices of transgender people, uplift their experiences, and stand with them in solidarity. Together, we can work towards a world where transgender people can live authentically. With joy, love, and care, and without experiencing or fearing discrimination or violence due to their gender identity.
