Faith and religious practices and values are deeply tied to notions and values of what it means to be a man. Because of the influence of religious leaders and institutions in society, well-executed faith-based initiatives can be an effective means of transforming social and gender norms. Most members of MenEngage Alliance work in predominantly faith-based contexts. Many incorporate faith-based approaches in their work for women’s rights, LGBTQI rights, gender justice, and climate justice.
Faith-based strategies employed by members of MenEngage Alliance:
Work with faith leaders can involves engaging with strongly held beliefs on what it means to ‘be a man’ based on existing cultural and religious interpretations of social expectations of boys and men. Members of MenEngage Alliance work through a number of strategies when it comes to faith-based approaches:
